I think the reason the benzodiazepines were so instantrly sucsessful as tranquilisers is thatt hey are better fpr anxirty than barbiturates - they can releive anxiety without sedating you.
Also, tolorance occurs much more slowly - the BMJ found that nitrazepam retained its efficenecy as a hypnotic for 26 weeks atleast, where as amylbarbitone started to lose efficiency after a few weeks, and by 6 months, was having in impact at all.
