I think overuse of meds is a bad call. Too many people are on too many meds for issues that shouldn't be handled by psychiatrists.
BUT, I will say that there are some people with more severe depression who have great responses to SSRI and other antidepressant drugs. I had a good response to 20mgs/celexa on top of my usual 30mgs/Abilify for an episode of severe, psychotic depression. I quit after 6 months though, once the worst of the episode had resolved and the sides from the celexa (apathy, laziness) were more trouble than the ongoing benefits (mild anti-anxiety effects, mostly).
I think its ill advised to stay on an ssri, no questions asked, for years and years and years. Depressive episodes--even severe ones, like psychotic depression--often resolve without any treatment, so I don't think it makes sense to kepe somebody on something that basically amounts to emotional novocaine w/o periodically assessing their need for ongoing treatment.
