Well, this is my first go at meds so I cannot give you any comparisons, but from my little bit of experience I can say that alprazolam (generic Xanax...a benzo) works very well to relieve anxiety and constant negative cyclical thought patterns.
I started at 0.25 mg 2x/day, and am up at 4x a day. It is great when it works...for me I have timed it to see exactly how long it takes to be effective (15 min) and how long it lasts in a stressful situation (3 hours 20 min)...but, I also know/feel exactly when it stops working too. In all honesty, in my current high stress situation, 0.25mg barely touches me, so I have increased it to 0.5 mg 2x/day (could be from change in generic brands from Pure Pac to Mylan??)...right now, that seems to work MUCH better/smoother for me (for now).
Apparently there are some pretty nasty withdrawal effects with benzos and physiological dependency on the drug, which make me a tad nervous. So, when I have time to not worry about commitments, pdoc is going to have me try a longer acting benzo like Klonopin (it can be overly sedating in some cases).
