Were you by any chance going directly from taking it regularly to taking it prn? If you're basically withdrawing from your usual dosage, prn probably won't work.
But once you have stopped taking it on a regular basis and gotten through all the withdrawal, prn might work. I was prescribed clonazepam daily and weaned myself off of it because I felt it was doing more harm than good taking it like that, since I just got increasing rebound anxiety as my brain got used to the dosage.
After going through the long process of getting off of it and then being completely without it for a month or so, I have been able to take it once in a while at a low dose and have it be effective, without the rebound anxiety and other withdrawal symptoms that can appear as tolerance increases.
But they're definitely drugs to be really careful with. If you just want to avoid them completely, maybe it's best to go with your instinct.
