Ambien is "less bad" than some of other pills out there, but still kind of bad when it comes to daytime drowsiness. Sonata might be better for you...or a reasonable dose of a high-potency, short-acting benzo, like xanax or ativan (just don't use them a lot).
On the natural side of things, there's always 5-htp (NOT with sris), niacinamide, and valerian or catnip.
On a personal note, I've found that sometimes a night without sleep gets me to look at things that are going on in my life. Sometimes I see things in a different light afterwards.
