Tegretol XR for Bipolar?

I have just been put on an anti convulsant called Tegretol or Carbamazepine. Different forums have mentioned that this medication can be used for Bipolar disorder but that it is not as effective as other medications. I don't want to take something that has been known to not be very effective. I do realize that we all respond to medication differently but I am still curious if any of you have tried this med for bipolar treatment?
