In reply to Barbituates for sleep? Which ones., posted by Maxime on October 18, 2009, at 17:20:01
Try an herbal product from Dr Zhang called Herbsom. Widely used in China for centuries. It consists of Corydalis, Zizyphus, and Schizandra. Not your usual household names.
In a 374 patient study, Herbsom was found to be statistically equivalent to methaqualone, an insomnia drug, but without adverse effects, hangover effect, or addiction. It also benefits the cardiological and neurological systems.
It was hard to find any users online, but the few I did find stated that once you take the capsule be prepared to go to sleep.
It is available from hepapro.com or by calling Dr Zhang's office directly. His patients are almost exclusively chronic late state Lyme failed by other doctors. His track record with over a 1000 patients is very impressive. He doesn't use many substances, but the ones he uses meet several criteria...pack a punch, minimal side effects, ability to cross the blood brain barrier, beneficial to the body as a whole, and suitable for longterm use. Insomnia, inability to sleep, and disturbed or painful sleep are huge problems in the late Lyme patients.
I don't know if Herbsom would overcome the insomnia of your med or not, but it sounds like it has very good potential. If methaqualone would, then Herbsom would. The benefit is that it is safe, inexpensive, supportive, time-tested and clinically tested both in the lab and in the real world.
