I've had good resuts with Lamictal, and like the previous poster I'd say it has few side effects compared to other mood stabilizers. If I were in your position I'd hope someone would recommend Lamictal as a first line treatment. I think lithium is a bit strong for your condition - I think it's used more for the lonf term treatment of bipolar I, and Lamictal is better at treating bipolar depression.
I'd agree about APs, there's no doubt they have a place in managing severe bipolar, but using them as first line agents in minor illness is overkill. There are serious drawbacks and you want to be alert enough to interact with your child normally.
