I think you've simply misunderstood his semantics.

Champion has more than one meaning. It is not only referring to a winner or superior individual, it also describes someone who is an ardent supporter or defender of a cause, e.g. champion of the homeless.

Ace is from Australia, and it doesn't surprise me that his use of the word reflects the British sense of the word, a meaning that seems to be less common in usage in North America. His promotion of Nardil is in full accord with that definition, i.e. ardent support of Nardil treatment.
