In reply to Prozac feels like speed - worth trying Zoloft?, posted by pluginbaby on July 26, 2008, at 2:21:28
> I recently tapered from Paxil (10 years use for panic disorder) to Prozac because it's considered safer in pregnancy. (We want to start planning a family) I started really low (5mg) and have slowly worked my way up to 30mg (which I've now been on for 2 1/2 weeks). The problem is, even though I've been on Prozac for almost 4 months total I continually feel wired, like I've had 3 cups of coffee. It makes it almost impossible for me to relax. (Although by evening this usually wears off). I'm not sure if this is withdrawal from Paxil (I've been off for 3 months now) or the Prozac is just not right for me. Is it worth trying Zoloft? Or is that likely to be just as stimulating?

Prozac was the first SSRI introduced to the US (though not in Europe) and it is one of the most stimulating. When I had to be hospitalized I saw people sprightlike and bubbly from just starting it. It can have that upward effect that usually wears off, but apparently for you hasn't.You might want to try a cleaner more recent SSRI like Celexa/Lexapro or the more sedating ones like Paxil/Luvox.
Mm... scratch the above I didn't read the part about the pregnancy, the others fall into C.If you've recent uptapered, you will feel this speed effect again, it should go away over time if you've only been on it for 2 1/2 weeks. Still it strikes me as odd because you've been on a barely detectable dose of Prozac (5mg) for 4 years.
I can't say that it is entirely the Prozac or maybe anxiety symptoms sneaking through because causality isn't necessarily causation.
Still, if you want to try the Zoloft, it is not as jumpy as Prozac -- unfortunately you can't use Paxil I guess with your situation because that would definitely be more sleep inducing.
It has an infinitesimal dopamine blockade but besides that it really isn't any more harmful one way or another of the SSRIs.
Just a thought-- Jay
