But, if I were writing a book, I might have the character explore some self hypnosis techniques to help him enter sleep as quickly as possible. I am not actually narcoleptic as much as I have trouble regulating my arousal level and suffer from ADD inattentive type.

Also, for authenticity sake..IMHO almost all sleep labs lead to an apnea or airway obstruction diagnosis as a "rule-out- before narcolepsy is diagnosed...so be prepared for a cpap machine recommendation. Thanks ncrainbow,
My errr....character has severe central sleep apnoea confirmed by several previous overnight studies. CPAP makes it worse, so "s/he's" doing the overnight again just to get a new baseline 'cos its been a few years & who knows how her AD meds, etc may be affecting matters.
The MSLT the next day is really her one stab at getting the modafinil she needs at a price she can afford. So I'm wondering if a ton of melatonin would do the trick to get her MSLT to less than 8 mins and yet still allow her to dream? I'm afraid (for her) that the benzos might kill the REM, which would render her an effective "fail".
.....my characters become "so real" for me, it's hard to type when I feel her pain so deeply...*cough*.....
