I dont imagine an MAOI would be good for mania considering it would create an overall increase in neurotransmitter activity which is really the opposite of what you'd like to do with someone prone to mania.

Lamictal is a weird weird substance and some people attain anti-depressant effects at 50mg and it takes other people 300mg for minor mood stabilization. Its really hard to get empirical evidence and studies that agree on anything with lamictal. We know it blocks glutamate and does some trickery with the kappa opiod receptor but beyond that its a mystery.
