Is your doctor a psychiatrist? Does he/she even know about MAOI's or much about antidepressants in general.. man o man. insomnia is in the top 3 side effects of pretty much all AD's except for a very very few like Mirtazapine. Many AD's do cause sleepyness and somnolescence but that is totally unrelated to the insomnia they can cause. I will just list off a few side effects most common with ALL AD's: insomnia, sexual problems, dry mouth, agitation, anxiety, urinary retention, constipation, sedation, weight gain. Most ALL these will go away with time like a few months. I would say insomnia/vivid dreams, sexual problems and drymouth are the main initial side effects. I started Nardil at 75mg/day (WOW), I know but I was desperate and didnt care about the side effects without titrating up. After 6 weeks it was Kicking in but it could have been better so 2 weeks ago I went up to 90mgs/day and I feel Great antidepressant effects now (2 months later). I take it for Social Phobia and panic antacks which leads to depression and agoraphobia if left untreated. SSRI's worked at one time but now they make me crazy with no good effect. My current side effects are quite severe but I know they will deminish, I have: insomnia, impotence (can't cum no matter what), constipation, urinary retention, weight gain (18 lbs in 2 months, my fault for eating so much at night waiting for it to kick in), I smell like nardil in my urine and feces, I have water retention so my eyes look droopy all the time like when you wake up, dizzyness upon standing, heart pounds when I eat protein.
Tat May Sound Horrible but I feel great and I have a STABLE mood happy to get all my tasks done during the day. You cant escape the initial side effects.
I'm a good looking, smart young man. Nardil has allowed me to actually use it. No Nardil = No life/hermit living alone with agoraphobia and depression forever. If you saw me now you would not notice any of those side effects talking to me, all you would say is 'what a cool guy'. Ambition is back and I can be myself without having a panic attack.. Anyway Sorry for the Long post..
But your doctor sounds like he knows nothing about MAOI's to say insomnia is uncommon (I bet 70% of people on it get it initially, just read around eh it pretty nuts) I would get a new doctor to help with your AD drugs. I found one after a few years and he's great and knows alot about all these AD's. You must find a doctor who is COMFORTABLE perscribing MAOI's and know the fact (psychiatrist) still many new psychiatrists dont recomend or deal with MAOI's. There are tons of sleep meds available in USA, the new Zopiclone is called Ezopiclon, and there's all the types like lunesta, ambian(ezopiclone I think) and I would try seroquel. If you are worried just spend time researching the internet and before you know it, you will know more about AD's then a doctor. I know I know more then most regular doctors.
Cheers NardilStarted. Damn long post
