> I've noticed people often use xanax against panic as needed. How long is the duration of the onset of action and how long do these protective actions last for you until the withdrawal (maybe even increase) in anxiety will begin? What is your average dosage for that? -Some people seem to have success with an as needed strategy.

>I've been taking 2 mg of Xanax per day (as needed) on and off for a few years. I have a rather bad case of GAD (generalized anxiety disorder). I wanted to be completely accurate, so I did a little research. Effects are usually felt within 20-40 minutes. It can take up to an hour to feel the full extent of its effects. The anti-panic effects of Xanax last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, excluding the after-effects which last several more hours. The withdrawal can be difficult at times, that's why I take 1 mg early on and wait several hours before I take my second dose. If I were to take both all at once, I'd be without my next dose to counteract the symptoms of the withdrawal. The second dose obviously wears off at some point, usually late in the evening as I'm getting ready for bed. I take my Ambien, and I'm off to sleep...it's really not that bad. I should probably mention that most people seem to dose a few times a day, 3 to 4...I find that I really don't need to.
