Mood stabilizers a must?

Ok - I know doctors are big on mood stabilizers and I understand why - but...

I haven't found one that really works. Some of them actually make me mean, irritable and downright manic.

So, how can a mood stabilizer be essential?

I felt more stable and happy on some of the ssris.
