You are bringing back memories of myself when I was in my teens,in the 70's. I always felt SO self conscious about not having anything to say. Curious, what is your age?
It may be from social anxiety (SA) which alot of others have written about above. Have you talked to a doctor about this yet? Unfortunately I had to suffer with this for years because no one was ever treated for it, it wasn't considered something that could be treated. It was considered your personality type. Psychiatry back in 60'and 70's was for really crazy people who went into mental hospitals for life.
I still don't know what my diagnosis is for sure, my social anxiety has diminished, still have episodic, debilitating depression with some ADHD. It really doesn't matter what the diagnosis is except you can be evaluated for this and treated successfully, giving you much more ease in social situations, whether you choose to talk or not.
