In reply to MAOI and hypertension episodes: recommendations?, posted by peridown on January 14, 2006, at 8:39:43
Nifedipine liquid-fill capsules (Procardia) are sometimes prescribed. This is controversial however due to the risk of serious side effects due to an abrupt fall in blood pressure. I'm not sure how relevent this is to MAOI users though. An MAOI hypertensive crisis is characterised by an ultra rapid rise in blood pressure in an individual whose blood pressure was previously normal, or at least near normal. A rapid fall in blood pressure due to nifedipine would probably be more dangerous for an individual who was suffering from chronic hypertension, especially if cardiovascular damage was already present.
