In reply to OCDers who use neuroleptics (like Seroquel), posted by chess on May 1, 2005, at 17:30:55

It's been given a bad name by people who misuse it and usually have no psychopathology. Xanax doesn't really work for OCD but is a great anti-anxiety drug. Clonazepam, a somewhat similar drug has been shown to work for both OCD and anxiety.
> I've read that in regards to OCD a neuroleptic like Seroquel must be taken with an SSRI or the neuroleptic might make the OCD worse. That's nonsense. I've read a lot of literature on this subject and that is not true. I take an MAOI and have used Zyprexa and Seroquel in low doses -- both dramatically helped my OCD. I'm trying Risperidone next, because this is thew one that really can obliterate OCD.
You can try the AP with a SNRI, MAOI, or any other antidepressant. Even alone you can try it.
But that statement is not true.
> Does anyone know if this is correct? It is incorrect!
> Has anyone taken a neuroleptic alone (without an SSRI)? What happened? Did it work for your anxiety? Did it make your anxiety worse? Did it make your OCD worse?
I took Zolft and Zyprexa together and it didn't help at all -- but then when I mixed the AP's with MAOI magic begun!!
> Thanks!
No worries dude!
