I wonder if he was suffering a form of bipolar depression? I saw a medline abstract a while back that mentions Dilantin's possible efficacy as an *antimanic*. My Mom was on Dilantin and phenobarbitol in the '50s and '60's for generalized (tonic-clonic) nocturnal seizures. Then she stopped taking it regularly later when her seizures stopped but she would get auras occasionally during the day (often photic stimulated), accompanied by panic and muscle stiffness in her neck and back and she would take one and she said it would help. It would scare her, because the daytime auras usually predicted a nighttime seizure.
