> Several years ago, thioridazine was one of the most widely prescribed drugs in the UK. Today, it is used only as a second-line treatment for schizophrenia. Its use was restricted due to the risk of serious arrhythmias, especially torsade de pointes.

> Thioridazine was popular because it is very cheap and is associated with a low incidence of extrapyramidal side effects. Sadly, it can cause strong peripheral anticholinergic side effects and is more hypotensive than most APs.

> Ed.I was on Mellaril for a brief period, after I developed psychotic mania from SSRIs. I was put on 200 mg/day. I don't much remember what it was like, other than I finally could sleep again. Years later, I was desperate for something to help me sleep, and I took 25 mg. Bad call! I have no idea how I could have tolerated the higher dose, as that much smaller one was very unpleasant. I threw the remainder in the trash.
