Cheap and effective: Barr Pharmaceuticals said U.S. regulators have granted tentative approval to the company's quickly-dissolving generic form of GlaxoSmithKline's Zofran antinausea tablet.
Barr (BRL) said it cannot begin selling its approved 4 milligram and 8 milligram tablets, however, until Glaxo's marketing exclusivity on the product expires. Glaxo's patent on the product lapses on June 24, 2006, Barr said in a release.
The drug is approved to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and some radiotherapies and post-operative nausea and vomiting. The quickly dissolving tablet form of the medicine had sales of about $167 million last year, Barr said.
