Hi Denise.I asked the reverse of this question of two expertes, including Mark George, MD at UMSC, ie. does failure to respond to ECT prognosticate non response to rTMS? Dr. George was quite clinical in his response, saying to me that there simply was not enough data to answer the question. He wouldn't venture a guess. The other person I asked concurred with Dr. George, but added that his inclinations were to deem the probabilities of successful treatment using rTMS lower in ECT non-responders.
From what little I know about both treatments, I would guess that the chances are better that one would respond to ECT after rTMS failure than vice-versa. ECT simply radiates its electrical effects deeper and wider throughout the brain.
Just a guess, though...
