It is classified as an anxiolytic/hynotic, Non-benzo, anthistamine, sedating. Sounds like it does a bunch.
The mechanism of action, according to my Palm database states that hydroxyzine "antagonizes central and peripheral H1 receptors (non-selective antihistamine). So that doesn't really tell me (a non-chemist) how this helps anxiety.
Incidentally, this is what my dog's allergist/dermatologist has my dog on for allergies. She has no apparent sedation. When HIPAA came out and I filled her prescription at my local pharmacy, they gave me a HIPAA disclosure form FOR MY DOG! Was I supposed to read it to her? Bring her in and put her paw print on the form? Is it even legal for her to "sign" things? Maybe I just should have fed it to her.
How funny is that?
Good luck with this med. I have seen it used for anxiety in a client with GAD. He did have a bit of sedation, but he also was on a ton of meds (had HIV).
Take care,
gg
