Alcoholism is a PSYCHOSOCIAL disorder. Simply because others in your family and yourself have/had a predisposition toward drug abuse in certain situations does not mean that you will "lose control" and go nuts with benzodiazepines. This is simply not true. People abuse drugs for REASONS; drug abuse is behavior; and it is impossible to code behavior in genes, only predispositions. Proponents of the disease model of alcoholism/drug addiction use this junk pseudoscience to perpetuate their myths.
Don't believe me? Read "The Diseasing of America: How We Allowed Recovery Zealots and the Treatment Industry to Convince Us We Are Out of Control" by Stanton Peele or "Heavy Drinking: The Myth of Alcoholism as a Disease" by Herbert Fingarette, distinguished professor of philosophy and addiction consultant to the WHO.
