What causes the heart to thump, but not beat quick

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas about the mechanism or culprit behind this, I often find my heart beating loudly, especially at night when laying on a pillow, it does not however beat rapidly at all, in fact its reasonably slow, any ideas?!
