Help! Ferrous gluconate--making me depressed?!

Posted by avid abulia on July 14, 2003, at 22:45:52

Hi all--

Today i went to the doc (regular doc) because i had signs of anemia and a history of anorexia...

So he did the tests, it turns out i am anemic, and it is due to iron deficiency (no big surprise since i hardly eat and supplement almost everything *except* iron)... so he gave me ferrous gluconate to take, the equivalent of around 35mg elemental iron, 3 times daily...

Well, i've taken one dose, and 3 hours later--my mood took a major sudden dive, and man, am i feeling down! i know iron does have an effect on catecholamine metabolism, so there would maybe be the answer there for why... But i've never heard of anyone getting depressed from iron, and was unable to find it listed as a side effect anywhere.

So, is this just a "down" sort of day, or am i reacting poorly to the iron preparation, or what? Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this, if it persists, because i have to take this iron for a good long while.

~AA
