I've taken both but am not on either right now. Everyone's different, but for me the TCA side effects were a lot of sleepiness (less on desipramine than imipramine) and constipation. They worked wonders on my panic disorder, and did nothing for my (atypical) depression.
Parnate, an MAOI, was wonderful for me for years, but then pooped out. However, it was very activating, so I had to take klonopin at night. Even so, I could never get up to a full dosage on that drug for sleep purposes If I had been able to, I might not have had to discontinue it becuase of poop-out. However, when I did take it and it worked, it changed my life. I was able to learn how to be less introverted, and even when the depression returned, that skill remained.
The MAOI diet sucks, but it definitely worth it if the med works for you.Goold luck either way.
