MAOI Diet: Pizza & Soy?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI's) are one class of drugs that are commonly prescribed for social phobia and other psychiatric disorders. Because interactions between tyramine (a chemical found in cheese, soy, etc.) and an MAOI can cause hypertension, patients taking an MAOI must often follow certain dietrary restrictions. In an ongoing attempt to refine the MAOI diet, Dr. Kenneth Shulman recently analyzed tyramine content in a vareity of pizzas and soy products.Using HPLC (high-pressure liquid chromatography), the tyramine content is 33 sample foods was determined: These sample foods contained a selection of cheeses, tofu, tofu-containing products, products that contained soya, and 6 different selections of pizza from large chain outlets. Foods with 6 mg of tyramine or less were considered safe for consumption with an MAOI.
The findings suggest that commercially available pizzas from large chains are safe for consumption with an MAOI. However, it is recommended to be causeious of gourmet pizzas from smaller outlets and any pizzas with aged cheeses added. In addition, all soybean products should be avoided while on an MAOI, especially soy sauce and tofu. Dr. Shulman also states that individual couseling is important for anyone on an MAOI diet.
