The Hemlock society - if you find their webpage - talks at length about this. Finding a compassionate doctor to prescribe is a whole nother story. Oregon is one of the first states to allow doctor assisted suicides. What state are you in? Perhaps there are other enlightened states with similar legislation showing compassion...not bound by the orthodoxies of the past.
Did you see the PBS 4 or 5 part series a year or two ago about Palliative care from the point of view of the patients, doctors, govnm't, etc? It was one of Bill Moyer's series that was very thorough and sensitively done.
