One of my many Pdocs switched me from Depakote (which seemed to wash through my system like water!) to Tegretol to stabilize my mood. That was in the days when I was dx'ed as Bipolar II (there have been other dx's: atypical depression, major depression, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia, etc., etc.....). Tegretol made me very sluggish and I was really frightened by the cognitive problems like the "word retrieval" difficulties...I also experienced some weight gain (5-10lbs), but I seem to gain weight on just about everything! BTW,I was on 600mg/day.
I also know an older man (about 65) who was on 1600mg of Tegretol for trigeminal neuralgia (sp?) and he basically became almost non-functional... shuffling as he walked, short-term memory probs, slurring speech and so on. Unlike me, he lost weight he couldn't afford to lose and looked emaciated... After he was gradually taken off Tegretol he returned to his normal weight and functioning level in a 2-3 days.
Can't say that I'm a fan of Tegretol!
Best of luck,
suji :-)
