In reply to Agitation and anxiety right after taking Serzone?!, posted by spacebaby on November 19, 2001, at 10:20:45
The anxiety and agitation may be caused by a metabolite of Serzone called mCPP (meta-chlorophenylpiperazine). While the parent drug compound and one metabolite of Serzone are antagonists of 5-HT2 heteroreceptors, mCPP is just the opposite; not suprisingly, while the parent drug's mechanism of action is attributed to its anxiolytic effects, mCPP is attributed to the anxiogenic effects sometimes experienced by Serzone users.
I think, in the case of neurontin, there isn't much of a risk of a drug interaction (except that you may feel more drowsy at times), and since neurontin is cleared so quickly, it may actually be quite a good choice for your particular problem. Serzone does do quite a bit to inhibit its own metabolism, and certainly could also raise the levels of other drugs that are metabolized by the same enzyme(s) Serzone inhibits. But neurontin in not metabolized in the liver and is largely cleared via the kidneys. It is a rather nice augmentation therapy, in that regard, and does have a nice, transient anxiolytic effect, with few adverse effects, and virtually no risk for tolerance or dependance. If I were you, I might give it a try.
> I have been taking Serzone for 6 weeks to cope with anxiety and stress. The drug has done wonders for me, but right after taking it, I often feel very nervous and agitated. This lasts for about 2 hours. I am on 100 mg a day, taken in the morning. (If I take it too late in the day, I can't sleep at night.)

> My therapist suggested that I could take neurotonin in conjunction with Serzone to relieve the anxiety. I am a little wary of combining drugs since I am *really* sensitive to drugs. (I had awful side effects with Serzone, and had to cut down to 50 mg a day for the first two weeks.) However, the nervousness and agitation post-dosing interferes with my ability to perform my job. I end up feeling guilty about not getting much done, and the guilt leads to even more trouble concentrating. Has anyone else experienced this side effect? Will it wear off?
