I took Surmontil augmented with Cytomel for about 8 years. It gave me the longest remission I have ever had (6-8 years). It was prescribed after almost all treatments then available (including several series of ECTs) had failed or pooped out. I did gain weight on it - slowly - and it was sedating. It was hard to get up in the a.m. I needed high doses to make it work. I tend to be very slowed down when depressed so it was not my pdoc's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc... choice. The longest remission since then has been about 10 months. Sigh.
