Jan,
Obviously Tegratol can be used as an antidepressant because research noted that metabolyte carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide does have
antidepressant activities,is chemically related
and patients can show cross sensitivity.
Pharmacology: It is an iminostilbene derivative
chemically related to the tricylic antidepressants.
Cross sensitivity and/or related problems: patients who are sensitive to tricylic antidepressants may be sensitive to Tegratol.

I share this info with you due to some unpleasant
experiences while being treated in ER. I do not nor have I ever taken antidepressants, however my
lab work showed this chemical. I was treated as if I were a lier and humiliated by hospital personnel. I have to prove this by researching the
internet and seeking help from various resources.
The physicians I have been dealing with must not
be aware of this and needs to be so others will not have to go through what I have. My Doc wants to change my meds and is requiring me to have labs
performed to see if tricylics are still presant, in other words...there is still a doubt?
Your doctor seems to be educated and this info is for you to research and answer your question.
Good Luck and I hope you have excellant results
