CarolAnn,
What a mess! I feel for you as I do things like this all the time. But once the shoe was on the other foot... A couple of months ago I bought some stamps at the grocery store. While checking out, I was joking around with the cashier and bag boy. When I got home and put away my groceries, I noticed that the stamps weren't there. I checked my purse, etc. to be sure I hadn't misplaced them. I called the store and told them what had happened. They said I could stop by the service desk and get them replaced. I thanked them and told them I wouldn't be returning the same night, but would get them soon.
A couple of days passed and I remembered to go get the stamps. The woman at the service desk couldn't find any stamps or notes about it. I finally had her ask the cashier who I had used. She said she didn't remember anything about it. The woman was trying to brush me off, almost implying that I was lying and trying to get free stamps. I realized there was no use continuing with her. I asked to see the manger. She said he'd be there on Saturday. I asked to see whoever was in charge at the moment. She reluctantly called the assistant manager up front. I calmly explained to him what happened. He turned to her and said, "Did you give her some stamps?" She looked shocked and angry and blurted out that no, she hadn't. He told her to get me some stamps. She said, "And just GIVE them to her?!" He said yes. She gave them to me I thanked HIM and calmly left.
My story could have just as easily been about some time I took something by accident. I was not angry that the cashier made a mistake. Afterall, I was distracting her with my teasing with her and the bagboy. I never complained about the cashier. I just didn't appreciate the callousness and disrespect I got from the service desk woman.
One other story....I was at my sister's house and she had an old neighborhood friend visit while I was there. While catching up with each other, I told her of my ADHD diagnosis. I gave her many examples of my forgetfulness. She was very interested and kind in her reactions.
Afew hours after she left my sister received a phone call and was laughing hysterically. When she got off, I finally got her to stop(well, almost) laughing long enough to tell me what was so funny. It seems our friend stopped for gas at her usual convenience store near her home on her way home. She was almost completely out of gas, and there was a snow storm. She couldn't get the gas to work. She went in and out of the convenience store several times to tell the cashier, but the cashier insisted my friend didn't know how to pump gas, that the pump worked just fine.
My friend got angry, sore at the woman and took off in a huff. She just barely made it to another gas staion. When she went to unscrew the gas cap on her car, she saw the gaspumphandle from the convenience store haning from her car. She never removed it before peeling out of there!!!! She threw it on the ground, got her gas, and left.
She was worried what might happen. But she also had the good humor to laugh at herself, and to share her story with family and friends. Gee, maybe ADHD is CATCHING....YIPES!!!! 8^)
