agitated depression vs. dysphoric hypomania

Posted by tulip on March 14, 2000, at 12:28:29

The subject just about says it. Some symptoms of agitated depression like irritability etc can also be listed as symptoms of dysphoric hypomania. I'm trying to determine if and what the difference is. I was initially diagnosed w/ depression months ago, with both apathetic and agitated features (to put it in my own words). Now I am diagnoed bipolar (and ocd). This determination was very recent, so I have yet to get clarification and such. I had what I suppose could be described as a dysphoric hypomanic episode induced by a 50% ssri increase last week, which then resulted in an immediate increase in the neurontin i just started 3 weeks ago, to counteract the hypomanc reaction.

Two questions really:
1. what is the difference between agitated symptoms in depression, and a dysphoric hypomanic bipolar episode?
2. does ssri induced mania/hypomania indicate bipolar, or can the mania purely be a result of the ssri in depression and therefore not an indicator of bipolar?

Thanks for your time,
tulip
