Effexor side effects vs Effexor XR side effects

Effexor put me into a virtual coma (sleeping 20+ hours a night/day). As I'm running out of options, I'm thinking about trying Effexor XR in the hope that it won't have this effect (or at least that this effect will be lessened). Anyone else have this problem (or another problem) with Effexor and have it improved with a switch to the XR version?
