Hi friends,
I started temporary disability this week after my manager tore me a new airway in the presence of my coworker. I could sue him for that, but don't think I will. Revenge is best served cold.
Anyway, I have bipolar 1 and ADHD. I think the zyprexa I take makes the ADHD worse, but zyprexa is the only thing that soothes the beast in me, so I'm stuck with it. Yes, I have tried all the other atypicals - no luck. For the ADHD, I take adderall, but it poops out long before I can get a new prescription for it. So in any month, I have a week of feeling semi-normal, and three weeks of being a real thick-headed dimwit.
Now you can see why my manager tore into me a little better - I was in tears when he finished, and called my pdoc for an emergency appointment. To make a long story short, she said she would back me if I wanted to go for permanent disability, but something in me made me hold back, so I only requested 2 months of disability in order to grow back some tail feathers, and after about a month and a half, I may pursue permanent disability - depending on how I feel then (I'm still licking my wounds from the chewing out I got Monday).
Anyone have my dx and been through this? How did it work for you? Are you on temporary or permanent disability? My employer has a temporary and a permanent disability insurance plan, and I just today went through the 'intake interview' so my case is pending. I hate the wait, and would love to know statistically what number of people are actually granted their disability request. If you have any experience with this kind of thing, I would love to hear from you. I do know that SS disability is hard to get, but I wonder if it is any easier through my employer's insurer for disability requests?
Thanks,
kotsunega

I am on disability due to severe depression and anxiety and bipolar II, depressive type. It was not all that hard to get on it just took a long time. You have to have been out of work for six months before you can apply. Then you apply and generally they make you jump through a lot of hoops and then they turn you down. Then you have to get a lawyer and jump through a bunch more hoops but finally, I was was awarded disability last October. It was a Godsend as there was no way I was able to work. I can't even cook or clean the house anymore most days.

omg.. Great thread. I've always wondered about disability because I can't hold a job for the LIFE of me. I have anxiety/panic disorder and possibly bipolar but not yet diagnosed.
Must you have insurance to obtain disability? I read that you must see a doctor once a month or something, but I am always at the local crisis unit in the hospital. Not a personal doctor, but it is a doctor ya know? I can't obtain Medicaid because I don't have children.
I desperately need Medicare but don't even know where to begin.

I mean... I desperately need disability, not Medicare hehe.
Good luck with your case. I had a friend who also had bipolar and had SS disability, but said it took over 2 years =( I'm sure it's worth the wait in the long run though. I can't hold a job longer than 2 weeks anymore.
Take care and let us know how it goes =O

Hi,The first step is to go to your nearest social security office and apply. There will be forms to fill out and they will send you to be evaluated by a psychologist of their choosing. They will ask for your medical records, etc. Then you wait. Don't be discouraged if they turn you down at first. You just get a lawyer and keep on trying. You will have to keep records of doctor visits and medications you are on. You have to have not worked for at least six months before you can apply.
Hope this helps,
Marsha

I have major depression with anxiety and was coping alright until I had my son 4 years ago. When I applied I was turned down, but my doctor said 99% of people are turned down, but all you do is get a lawyer and appeal. It does take forever but it's worth it if you can't work. I think I first applied back in 05, was turned down, then I appealed, then went to court last summer and finally last fall I got my first check. So it took about 2 years. I do hope to go back to work some day, but first I need to get my health straightened out. Also, you can still work part-time. I think you can earn up to $800 a month as well as get Social Security.
good luck,
brooke

oh, that's good info 4WD and brooke!! Well, I quit my job on Monday but they called me and asked me to come back, they really like me blah blah. So I got my job back, I really hope I can keep it together and hold on to this job. It's a great job, so many benefits. Medical insurance, dental, IATA card with free flights, free entrances to theme parks, cheap hotels, car rentals, etc. It's a nice company to work for but when you suffer with a psych condition, it's so hard to predict how you're going to feel one day to the next. Today was a wonderful day, I was in a great mood and felt wonderful. However, tomorrow might be a different story. I might not be able to sleep tonight, anxiety... wake up feeling like a zombie and then go into work not able to concentrate. When I feel like crap, all I think about is my bed! I watch the clock all day long, when is this day going to be over, I want to lie in bed and sleep off my misery. Then, I wake up and feel wonderful. Then the next day, it's a 50/50. This is why it is so hard for me to hold a job.
Anyways, thanks for the info and best wishes to you all =O
