'soup' and losing weight

Jane gave me a good idea for soup....just throwing healthy things together in a pot. This time I used: kale, zucchini, onion, mushrooms, canned fire roasted diced tomatoes, canned green beans, salt, pepper and garlic powder. It was really good! and healthy....I bet adding chicken or rice or something would be good too

It was really easy (which is required for me) and hopefully stuff like this will help me lose weight. I think i gained a lot of weight from winter...so the better weather should help too.

I need to lose weight also! Soup is great. I just bought lentils and black beans to make soup with. But I'm a soup novice. I have a friend who was a chef and she makes the most delicious soups. I'll call her afterward and say, what did you put in that soup?, and she doesn't remember, has no recipe. She just throws in whatever.

Squash soup can be pretty good, too. They are really cheap here, anyway. Bit of a mission to chop them up but then add some curry powder (from an indian store if you can) and then natural yoghurt and cilantro to serve.

Adding chick peas gives it some protein. Boiling water on some chick peas and let them soak for 4 hours or overnight... Then add the pumpkin and some water... Add some curry powder and keep tasting it / seeing how the flavor develops...

Of course it is even better with coconut milk / cream... But that isn't so fabulous for weight loss... Chick peas contain calories too, of course. But the protein they add helps make up for it...

I had this so much I'm over it right now. Have been mostly doing chickens (dried italian herbs and paprika) and water / stock. Or beef stew with potato, carrot, sweet potato / kumara then peas and some cornflower to thicken. It is all starting to... Taste the same, though. Keen for new ideas.

I love soups!

when did you add the kale?

i'd like to make more vege soups, but i'm never sure what to do about kale or spinach or whatever.

i've heard only wonderful things about kale... and i've found it at the supermarket... but i'm not sure what to do with it. is it bitter like silver beet? I have an aversion to the latter... but i like baby spinach in salad or i can do wilted spinach with eggs.

I lost weight unintentionally by eating soup and drinking coffee,black, no sugar, most days. It was when my son was a toddler and that's all I had time for! I chased him around all day.

When my daughter was 7mo - 18mo (when she started crawling, then walking, then running around) I was breastfeeding and couldn't eat enough. I would go to McDonald's, order a cheeseburger, coke and fries - just for a snack. And I still lost weight like crazy.

I remember taking son to dr at 11 months and reporting that he'd just taken his first steps alone the day b4. The dr looked at me and said, "I feel sorry for you...you're gonna be chasing him all over" Well, in just another day or so, I was. It was a fun time tho, just chasing him from one disaster to the next!! I weighed 114lbs then!

For some reason from age 18 till now have weighed naked each year at ob-gyn at 128. Think that's set point. But since have gone in about 8 years no idea? P

I weigh 135lbs. On Zoloft, remeron, klonopin, I weighed 175lbs. Lost weight, after tapering remeron and Zoloft. Right b4 I gave birth, I weighted 188lbs, the most Ive ever weighed! Im 5'6 1/2" tall.

omg gadchik! i'm 5'6.5'' too! I'm almot 170 now :/ I'm switching from celexa to zoloft right now...hopefully that will help...and hopefully won't make me fatter!

I bet the warmer weather and sunshine will help too! I want to get back to 150.

I think the switch from celexa to Zoloft will help. My pdoc always assured me that the remeron caused my weight gain. She always said most people didn't gain on Zoloft and some even lost weight on Zoloft. I guess I'd like to weigh 130lbs(im small boned) but 135 is ok, Im happy : )

I'm 5'7" and weighed, when I was young, 135. But when I was in my 20s and on, I found that 145 was my "set point." I tended to stay there and felt healthier at that weight than at a lower weight.

I took AAPs for a while and blew up to 205. I stopped the AAPs, went down to 160 and have stuck there. I so want to get back to 145. I can't seem to find the will to really, really diet. I start to, am okay for a few days, then I eat something yummy and fattening.

I'm not a sweets person. For me, the problems are: meatball subs, gyros, whitefish salad on a toasted bagel (with tomato and red onion, it goes without saying), onion rings, steak fries, pizza.
give me a box of chocolates and I will have one, put the box away and forget about it. Give me a large pepperoni and sausage pizza and I will eat every slice. Not all at one sitting, but over a couple of days.

Perfect weight for you. Someday I'd love to know the reason for that depression that was psychotic. I know mine was the thyroid becoming hypo during menopause. If I had know that was the cause I never would have taken an ad. I knew I was born l0 years too early. P

That sounds healthier and way tastier than what I make. I'll have to try that.

Everything you described sounds delicious. I'm not as dedicated a cook I suspect. I basically use the same combination of vegetables every day but I found that alternating between tomatoes and no tomatoes can make it taste totally different. The same with adding or leaving out something sweet like carrots. Or add or leave out coconut milk or a piece of frozen chicken Then I just rotate a few spices - currently garam masala, chili powder, curry, and maybe hot pepper and ginger and end up with tastes different enough that I can eat the same basic dish for months.

P, my pdoc determined that my psychotic depression stemmed from no sleep for a month. She has always said the key for me now is to make sure Im sleeping, and I guard my sleep like it's pure gold!

That's where the cayenne pepper comes in! It disguises all sorts of cooking miscalculations. :)

I do admire people who are good cooks. I suspect my secret is in having low standards which are fortunately shared by my immediate family. All others get served take out.

That sounds tasty! Soup is a good way to fill you up so you don't eat as much during your meal.

I don't know if it was the meds that were making me fat or what, but since I stopped taking all medications about a couple of years ago, I've gone back to my normal baseline weight and I maintain it without effort.

I can fit back into all of my late high school clothes and even my prom dress.

Unfortunately it's not always a good idea to stop medications so it may be something one has to live with.

I'll never be stick skinny. I'm still on the higher end of normal weight and I don't think I'm meant to be on the lower end. I've accepted it.

One weird thing....I find that dieting backfires on my like 99% of the time. I will lose weight but it is always regained. I get super hungry after a month or so and I gain everything back.

I've abandoned the whole concept of dieting altogether now. If I want to eat that 2000 Calorie burger with cheese, bacon, fries and a cream soda I will. It gives me a lot of pleasure and satisfies me for a long time.

I'm finding that it will balance out for me now. My body just knows to eat less in the coming days to make up for that indulgence.

I wonder if those trying to lose weight might have more success if they stopped thinking out food all the time? Hmmm...
