How do you know when you're 'depressed'?

Posted by sleepygirl2 on April 8, 2013, at 9:13:38

And not, say, just sad? and maybe disappointed by things in your life? Overwhelmed? Angry?
I mean is depression really a distinct entity?

its all anger, sadness of situations, helplessness, rejection, gloomy feelings, some extreme pain experienced in the past....all bundled into one, that results depression for me, and it get intense to where only see gloomy, doom, sadness.....all put together.

some people still have just a chemical imbalance, which makes them depressed even though they have lots of things, and love, everything.

For me, a big huge Absolutely!! I find it is definitely a different entity. It just has a different feel to it than sadness or disappointment or anger or other normal-range emotions. The deep despair and hopelessness, the indescribable psychic pain, the total emptying out of all that is you. They are pathological and well beyond reasonable reactions to real stresses.

I was explaining to a friend recently that I was stressed out, overtired, frustrated, sad, and just generally and thoroughly miserable. BUT I was NOT depressed! And I was quite pleased about that.

When I have severe depression I am unable to think rationally about anything. I feel completely hopeless, helpless. I stop all activities that I normally enjoy. I get severely anxious. I stop eating, drinking. Disappointments can make me sad but do not lead to a depressive episode for me. I think I would say mild depression or feeling sad is all in the mind and how you react to it but a severe depression has a lot of extra symptoms that come with it. herpills

Thanks for the input folks :-) (nm)
