Is it lazy?

Posted by sleepygirl2 on March 6, 2013, at 9:41:45

If you just don't want to be around a single soul?
If the thought of it makes you tense?
and makes you feel exhausted?
If you just want to feel safe for a while?

No, it's what you need right now. Go with the flow.

It can become a habit though which isn't good. One day is fine. Then could lead to not going out at all? Phillipa

I need large slabs of time alone.

Some people don't....I just find being with people really draining....it can be really strong, like I need morphine to put up with it with any grace at all, if you know what I mean. Just trying to make myself clear here.

This is nothing to do with laziness.

There is heaps you can do alone.

I feel more at ease if the demands on my identity are maxed out, then at least it is familiar territory. As in
'Egos are just fictional identities. What's yours is mine and vice versa, I will never let you go.'
'You feel like a vampire, but if you do not exist?'
But all the rest of the time I am waiting, anticipating, second guessing. It is very tiring. Just about with everyone, but not (glad to say) with my immediate family.
It can make anything really difficult, anything with anyone.
Leonard Cohen has been very good value with me. At least I'm not afraid of dying. Maybe I am :)

There is a poem by Eliot, Hysteria, which covers this well. Is it in French in the original?

As she laughed I was aware of becoming involved in her laughter and being part of it, until her teeth were only accidental stars with a talent for squad-drill. I was drawn in by short gasps, inhaled at each momentary recovery, lost finally in the dark caverns of her throat, bruised by the ripple of unseen muscles. An elderly waiter with trembling hands was hurriedly spreading a pink and white checked cloth over the rusty green iron table, saying: If the lady and gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden, if the lady and gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden I decided that if the shaking of her breasts could be stopped, some of the fragments of the afternoon might be collected, and I concentrated my attention with careful subtlety to this end.

My first shrink said I had no sense of identity, but that was 40 years ago. I do now, or at least I have carved out a niche with my strengths and weaknesses.

Why does being alone make you feel safe? I hate being alone, yet my job requires a lot of alone time, solitary work. I try to schedule regular meetings with friends and phone calls to keep myself from becoming isolated. Isolated is no good. It makes you weird and unaccountable to others.

I do find it draining. I never forget myself, and right now, it's more of an effort than usual.

I don't have to scrutinize everything, and be conscious of everything I do. I can feel however I feel, and not hide it. I suppose that's part of it. I feel low, and so smiling is an effort, talking, pretending to be comfortable.

Reality and responsibility just won't allow that. Alone time must be scheduled.

Not at all.

Are you stressed or overstimulated? Introverts need time alone to recharge. Maybe lots and lots of time alone when stress is high.
