I remember everyone of my dogs. They gave me joy in their lives and I was with them when they passed on. They gave me unconditional love and even when they were adults they had the souls of a pup. Every one of them has a piece of my heart.

In regards to facing the world, there are also sub-categories: cannot face the world and do not want to face the world. Then there is do not know how to face the world.

Those who do not want to face the world may have some compelling reasons, not all revolving around free-choice and content to be idle.

Anhedonia may be involved, other factors....

We need a board just for dog stories, not social, but DOGS...they're a topic of their own.

What my dogs could tell about my days spent at home over the past 6 years (my Una is going to be 7 this Dec), her eye contact says it all. She is a therapy dog and is wise beyond her genus, more intelligent than most people I know and listens to every word I say or don't say.

For me, boredom is the first symptom that I am getting depressed again. I feel unmotivated and time seems to drag. I can't get out of bed on weekends because I hate the thought of getting up and not knowing what to do with myself. When I'm not depressed, I'm very content to read, exercise, do errands.

Picked this one to respond to agree a board for dogs. I lost my first dog ever at age 17 and never got over him. He let me cry into his fur nightly when my Son was in Desert Storm. I had a purpose in life. It was like nursing I kept him alive til couldn't any longer. I miss my baby. I now have two pups not the same although one is much better behaved and also tuned into my feelings. I'm seeing I'm afraid to get to attached hurts too much to lose. I also likle the three types of bordom relate to that also. I seriously could kick the pdoc that said no more nursing it was for himself and not me. The pdocs I worked with knew he let me drink with benzos and he didn't want me to return to work. Afraid of consequences for self. I was so comfortable doing my work and felt so fulfilled. Love Phillipa

Everyone of you are right. All are factors of boredom. If I were occupied I wouldn't see imperfections hence no surgery. What I need to do is accept that I can't lift 50lbs anymore part of job description. I used to love keeping patients alive ie: dopamine drip keep the blood pressure up based on forumula for KG's. Pumping on chests for CPR. I really thrived on this. Hard to have to give up as getting to old. Phillipa

Phillipa, how difficult it must be to have had work you were passionate about and then have lost it. Sounds like a grieving process, the way you write about it. I'm sorry for what you have lost. Life can kick really hard and unfairly. Hugs to you.

P, I'm a teacher nearing retirement age and though I will still have my own studies and writing once I retire from the classroom, I'm not sure how I'll feel. Some of my colleagues can't wait to quit teaching "so they can do their own work" and then they just vegetate; others go happily off to the library and continue their research. Other chuck the whole thing and go fishing. Even during the worst of my anxiety / depression I could go into the classroom and perform. Not always at my best & sometimes in a state of near-total dissociation, but it gave me a kind of center. And when I'm well, there is nothing better or more satisfying. Again, not sure how I'll feel when I hit retirement age in a few years.

My dogs have gotten me through some of the worst times. Very hard to describe the exact nature of the relationship except to say that it is definitely two-way, giving & receiving, and that it involves respect.

Yes I would love a dog board. I noticed you said for dog stories and not social. Could you elaborate on what you mean not social.

Dogs have some marvelous and unusual powers of intuition and at times seems like esp. But probably just very developed senses that let them perceive things we cannot do.

I also like you lost my career. In a sense we do define ourselves with our work. But like a death we have to move on and find a new purpose. Yes we are getting old and I know I can't do the same things. Two bad hips and a bad back. But I find purpose in loving and taking care of my dogs. I play with them and see their happiness when they see me and that makes my heart feel full. I came downstairs this morning and my bullmastiff charged me in joy. She was so happy to see me and that made me feel good.

This board is a place for mutual support. Why criticize another poster? Direct comments towards a particular post rather than the author. As for being a 'downer', that is subjective. One can choose to skip posts, esp. if the one is not the originator of the thread.

Yes, most of us here are unhappy in our own ways, and we cope in our own ways.

I have to back manic on this one floating and please do not take as a criticism. Floating you have taken positive steps to better your situation. So you understand that when one has a problem you have to make changes. If you continue to repeat your behaviors than that is the definition of insanity.
Manic and I have been around this board for many years and get to see what people do or don't do.To be honest I have been guilty of this. Doing nothing. I have finally begun taking meds and trying to stick with them. I have had some good results and had some poop outs. Than move on and try another. So I guess I am pro med.

What manic is saying is if you go back for years and read her posts you will see that nothing has changed. It's as if time has frozen. We only get so much time and than it runs out. Same drugs, rides her bike every night and same comments. Continously writes post about horrible drug side effects. I am aware of drug side effect as I read them. So recently she wrote a post about clomipramine and some person had horrible side effects. At least I'm taking a chance. Maybe I'll get side effects but maybe I'll come out of my depression and feel better. Let's be honest Floating is that supportive? Writing posts to scare people. Every time someone is on pamelor she writes a post about she was on 10 mg for one night and was plastered to her bed all day. Seriously she has written that time after time. The impression I get is her life is really bad and she doesn't want to see other people succeed.

Phillip needs more than support as she needs the truth. It's time to make some changes. I know meds have sides. But if you're lucky sometimes you take a med and wake up feeling better. Life has side effects as you get old and die. So take a med and take a chance. In the last year I've tried a couple meds and had some really good days. If people care about her it's time to tell her the truth. She says she scared she's scared of meds. I question why has she hung around a med board for almost 10 years. She posts on almost every thread. Instead of watching other people get better become one of those getting better.
Floating I know you are a compassionate person and only mean the best for all here. But manic has hit the nail on the head in this case. I think he is trying to shake Phillipe up with the hard truth. Manic I think I need to listen to you myself and do a little more living. Thank you.

Hi Bulldog,

No criticism taken. My point to maniac and anyone else is that if one poster is tired of another poster, just leave it alone.

I know all three of you have known each other for years. If you care about Phillipa or any other poster, there might be better ways to communicate concern. Teasing and sarcasm, say, for example about cosmetic surgery can really hurt more than help. As a woman, I can be sensitive about my appearance. Because of my personal history, teasing and rough play can trigger shame. Everyone is different. But I can't assume my sarcasm or black humor (which I'm very fond of) is always appreciated.

And tolerance. Seems you and maniac are really pretty confident in taking care of your med needs. Maybe that confidence has been hard won for you. Maybe for maniac, too. I think it' wonderful and inspirational--really. Why let other people's med anxieties get in your way? Seems folks here run the gamut from med-phobic to Gonzo psychedelic.

I anticipate reactions since I've been here over a year. Somebody almost always tells me I'm bipolar. Or I need a special bloodtest. Jeez, my own brother wants me to replace my teeth, drink reverse osmosis water (and shower in it) and that I'm emasculating my son because there is floride in his water. I wanted to post about some probably dumb neurotransmitter test my physiatrist ordered, but thought better of it.

Oh well, I'm rambling here. Bottom line: I've been enjoyong philipa's tjread, and I felt the posts were getting a little rough.

FB don't feel dumb. Guess what today a lady who works in Costco has been out on medical leave for quite a few months. This time hysterectomy and having problems with it said that in the ICU they hooked her brain up to something she didn't know what and it showed her serotonin was low. And they don't want her on hormones. I thought neurotransmitters couldn't be tested? I said I thought most serotonin in gut she said no the doc tested them in her brain?????? I'm amazed. You will never know what you might learn by talking to others. Phillipa ps how you read this

Keeping in mind that the idea here is not to post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down, could you please rephrase the above?

But please don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person, and I'm sorry if this hurts you.

It's up to you to decide whom you interact with. Sometimes interacting with others may be frustrating, staying civil may be a challenge, and new skills may be required. If you're open to developing new skills (I know that may not be why you came in the first place), that's another way in which you might be able to be supported by other posters.

Phillipa, I'm also sorry if you felt hurt.

More information about posting policies and tips on alternative ways to express oneself, including a link to a nice post by Dinah on I-statements, are in the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above posts, should of course themselves be civil. Thanks.
