Are you able to completely seperate them? As in having a living space for each cat? Sleeping, eating, peeing place.

not really, but they each have their own litter box, own food, own bed, same water though - nice little electric fountain :-)

Are they in the same room?
Like could you move one cat's litter box to a different room from the other one?
and could you feed them in seperate places?So they each would feel like they have their own, uncontested space.

I'll find the article I'm thinking of but the idea is if you completely seperate the cats' living quarters, they will be happier and can be slowly reintroduced in a netrual area, used by neighter.
Then you gradually move the litter boxes back together.
And their food next to the other's.
And then they won't fight as often or at all.

Hi,
my two cats once went through a "fighting period". It was terrible, i didn't know what to do, I had to keep them in different rooms, without forgetting to close the door, they would meow loudly , it was a nightmare :-)but...it didn't last long. It was less than a month. Luckily it was winter, and we tried to re-introduce them when they were cold, One of them was sleeping near the heater and slowly they became friends again. They sometimes still faught or chased each other but they never faught badly anymore. IT was just a phase.
it's bad, but it will pass...you have to be extra-patient while it lasts...

I read that if you come home and your cats are hanging out in the same room, they secretly like each other.
My cranky old female Chloe, and my arrogant younger male Milo have never been lovey dovey, and sometimes there is screaming and clumps of hair found.
but a couple of days ago, (I didn't witness this), they were both in the bathroom while my wife was bathing, sitting together in front of the space heater, and Chloe started licking Milo, and he let her. So you never know. after 9 years or so anything can happen.

are you absolutely certain they're fighting? i have two cats also, and when cats play with each other it looks like fighting. the fur flies, noisy, etc. how long have you had the two?

well one looks like she's playing, the younger one, but the other one looks serious
I've had one for almost 5 years, the other for about 3 - honestly they've been doing it for a long time - so far no one is hurt too badly - I just have these lovely fantasies of them hanging out together when we aren't home, like two bugs in a rug, peas in a pod, fuzzy friends (somehow though I doubt it ;-)

Seriously, though, the thigns that helped me were having one more litter box than there were cats, having those litter boxes in different rooms -- and letting them work it out. I know it's hard -- believe me, I do know it's hard. The one rule I had was No Fighting On The Bed. Anytime someone broke that rule, there were Flying Cats in my bedroom. Otherwise, though, I did my best to ignore it.
And it stopped.
The reason it stops is that the cats aren't trying to kill each other, and they're not trying to be Number One. They're just trying to find out who is number one. Once they establish dominance, they will settle down. It may take a while, but the more you allow them to work out it, the faster that will happen.
If you can't do that, though, try watching what starts it. If it's the younger cat trying to play, then grab the younger cat and give him/her a time out. If it's the older cat attacking the younger, give that cat a time out. Just grab, and lock into a small space. We used a half-bath, just the right size. And I would set a timer outside the door, for usually 10 or 15 minutes. It actually worked, too. The cat would go in hissing and nasty, and come out literally purring. I think it gave him a chance for quiet time, when he was overstimulated.

our younger cat usually starts it, too. but neither one actually LOOKS like they're playing. however, the back fur stays down, and there are never any injuries. if they were truly fighting there would be torn ears and faces at the minimum...
