I don't think that cheery words are the only way to be supportive. If you are on this board, you probably know that life sucks a lot of the time. I don't trust anyone who tells me it doesn't or anyone who tells me it will get better. My experience says otherwise. The most compelling thing that someone said to me was when I was in a suicidal state. It was a doctor in a hospital. He said, "Life can suck and maybe it always will. But in between the intense moments of pain come brief but exquisite moments of beauty. Live for those moments." I try to because his words ring true.

You know the idea of not resisting the current moment. That whatever it is is what you deal with and accept, and if it's terrible that's cool too. Sort of. That you care enough about the world to work from where you are with what you've got. And if you don't want to accept it, then that's something to be accepted as well. Which maybe means for negative mental movements we don't have to be too involved in creating a story from them. Accepting in life that this is as good as it gets. What about that? I can think of a few differences I'd like. I keep coming back to that thing Jesus said. 'To him who has shall more be given, but to him that has not, even that which he has shall be taken away.' Fairness doesn't come into it.

I always figure that things do get better. Then they get worse again. Then they get better. Then they get worse again.
And so on.

Hmmm... I wouldn't say that life sucks exactly...
I think maybe life is neutral...it's not good or bad...it's about experiences.
Some experiences are good and others are bad. I think we should live for both.
