Town - Desperation

I am reading Stephen King's "Desperation" and am intrigued by the name of this town in the middle of the Nevada desert.

Can anyone offer some history on how this town came about its name?

(PS Dr Bob and deputies - though I have quoted the book - I am interested in the history of the town as mentioned above and not the book. Therefore, a sweet request not to redirect this thread to the Books board).

I think it's a fictional place, I'm not 100% sure though.
