Has anyone else seen the ad for Tylenol PM (I think that's the correct med) where the woman says "I'm wasn't the type of person to take a sleeping pill and I didn't want to become one." I find that really insulting. What is the "type" of person who takes a sleeping pill? Is that some sort of immoral action? Does anyone else share my outrage??

I understand what you're saying. The problem I have with those types of media messages is the bigger issue of what's being conveyed. I think it just renforces how society sees problems and using chemical means as a way to deal with them. It is anger producing and I feel it is important because this is what's being presented as how one "should" feel about using a med.
Misinformation and incorrect messages will only increase the stigma.

OK, so you're not the type of person to take a sleeping pill, but you are the type of person to take a pill to help you sleep.
It is a pretty dumb concept. It just plays more on that divide in our thinking.

The people who made that commercial all probably use some type of "sleeping pill" to get to sleep themselves.
But I guess it's ironic in the Alanis Morissette kind of way, like, isn't it? :)

It helps me function about 15% better, but is not nearly enough to get me back into the work force. Since this treatment represents a dead-end, I am just taking it as a "bridge" until something new comes along. I tried to convince my doctor to go up to 80mg on the Parnate, but he allowed me only 70mg. I've been up to 150mg before with another doctor. Unfortunately, the new doctor had his patient taking 120mg complain of a severe headache. He's afraid to use it like that anymore. I'm thinking of having him consult with my old doctor.

I realte to the ad, I wasn't the type of person who would take ANY type of drug and now I have to. I think it is just implying that she wasn't someone who used medication, and doesn't want to become hooked. There are definately different groups of people when it comes to drugs. the ones who WONT take them, the ones who over use....and so on. But i do understand, I am sensitive to things like that.

If she's so ashamed to take a sleeping pill, she ought to go really stealthy and take Benadryl or Dramamine instead of Tylenol PM.

I think that is what it's implying but that's also what the problem is. It's enforcing the stereotype of the person who uses medication as someone who is casual about it, who is weak, or who is addicted. It's an unfair and innacurate stereotype. Most of us never wanted to take pills! I wonder who on this board ever felt just fine after hearing they may have to take medication for the rest of their lives. I think it's minimizing the situation to say it's "just" reinforcing a predjudice.

to be honest Ive never seen the ad. I guess I should see it before making a judgement. I was not trying to minimize anything, I just didn't take it (from what I read)as implying anything negative about mental health....but Ill look for it on TV.

I am disgusted by a lot of ads. I despise comparison to a competition, a cheap and mean trick. Misery and infliction of pain is also not funny to me, showing people getting hit in the head, poked in the eye or the like was lost on me with the Three Stooges.
How the industry wastes their advertising budget isn't my problem. I have a 'mute' button, or better yet ... the 'power' button.
