BP and Work Problems, any ideas?

Posted by D minor on February 6, 2005, at 18:07:58

Hi all,
I've never posted on the social board before, so I guess this is sort of an experiment.

Here's the thing. I've been dxed Bipolar. It's been well over a year since I was last in the hospital and over that time course I have improved to the point where I think I can say that I'm pretty high functioning now. I have a fairly high stress job at Long's pharmacy and I'm taking two classes at a JC.

But the stress is starting to get to me. I told my bosses that I need to reduce my hours because of school. They basically said no. My pschologist suggested that I tell them my issue. But yesterday my boss referred to one customer as an "axe murderer" just because he was picking up some Risperdal. He also made a few cracks at a guy with a "mental illness." So... now I'm more than a little reluctant to walk up and say "I'm bipolar."

But I'm really starting to feel the stress. The bosses say wait two weeeks so they can higher another person. But I don't know if I can hold on that long. I don't want to end up back in the hospital. I also don't want to jepordize my job.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
dm

sounds like you need a new job. and if i were a customer, i probably wouldn't return.

it *is* customary to give two weeks' notice, but it's not your problem if they've not hired someone after that time. give your two weeks (if you can afford to not work), and get the heck out of there.

kudos to you for keeping up school and work though.

good luck,
ghost

if you are a pharmacy tech you are protected legally from a workplace that causes mental anguish due to a disability. should you decide to divulge your mental health issues, it is your employers responsibility to provide you a workplace free of derroguatory remarks that could be contrued as harrassment in a court of law.

i also believe they are required to work around the hours you are capable of working and that replacing you permanently could also bring them a lawsuit. BP may be an issue some employers take in to consideration before hiring someone. Once you are already an employee the employer has a lot less latitude in how they deal with you and your issues as 'disabled' has many threads to it if you ended up going that route.

Could you just say you have a health probklem and it is very personal so you don't want to get specific. And just say that you are having a flare up with it and might need to get medical treatment. Apoligize for the late notice but emphasize that you just need some time to get it under control and then can get back to work again as usual. It cuold be a list of things, he also has no legal right to know. It is really important to take care of youself! He sounds like an ***. i hope it works out
