I guess it's "that time" in my life, I'm getting hot flashes that are really uncomfortable...they make you want to run for the shower because you feel like a sweaty mess! I'm ALREADY taking loads of medication for hypertension and psychiatric disorders, does anyone have experience with soy or dong quai or black cohash? Does any of it really work? I'm going to be living on a budget and I don't feel like "experimenting" with that stuff. Thanks...

No experience her, but not looking forward to it myself (it isn't far on the horizon, I think). Have you spoken with your gyno about this?

Sorry, WR, not much experience with the alternative meds. Black cohosh never tried. Dong quai tried a short while, then read some stuff that made me uncomfortable about it (but, it's been so long ago I've forgotten what it is, of course).
Prem Pro is what helped me, still helps me. I had mega hot flashes; so nice sitting in an interview (this was when I still had enough cognitive ability to make sense during one) and start pouring down sweat, rivulets running down from my scalp and temples onto my neck, under my glasses. To swipe at the sweat or let it run, not knowing which will be more noticeably offensive. Decided on letting it run. Yes, how very nice all that was.
So, when I got serious about a solution, I went with the standard western meds. Tried wild yam root also, no luck there.

No help on the "alternative meds". It seems we're all so different. Prempro sent me into rocketing emotional highs/lows, with no abatement of symptoms. I pushed my gyn into Femhrt which he calls "the gold standard" by threatening mass destruction of a five city block area during my..... more unpleasant moments. Once on Femhrt, EVERYTHING was just dandy!! It also isn't one that the study was done on (that showed neg. affects). I think that was Prempro.
Good luck!

Thanks anyway, I guess I should stop screwing around and go see the GYN, I'm way overdue anyway-
after having one family member die of ovarian cancer you would THINK I'd know better. I've just been so screwed up mentally that I've been neglecting the other body parts. With all the other stuff I'm taking probably I'm better off not messing around with herbs anyway, God knows I don't want to throw anything else out of whack.
On to the gynecologist - pap smear and mammogram,
yippee.
