There is a very distinctive pattern in this bout of depression I'm currently experiencing. Mornings are particularly bad. I awake feeling mildly depressed, but it quickly intensifies over the next, say, 1/2 hour. This intensity lasts maybe a couple of hours. Through the day it subsides to, varyingly, a lesser or greater extent.
By about mid to late evening the depression, while not "gone", is significantly milder.
I go to bed and the cycle is the same the next day.
I am not taking antidepressants. I've tried several and cannot tolerate them, am hypersensitive to their effects. Even supplements which impact neurotransmitter activity are not tolerable. So, I've done several CT sessions, a group Mindfulness program, Omega-3's and B Vitamins.
Any insights into this diurnal swing would be of great interest.

it's common i've read articles of people waking up depressed, i used to get depressed in the afternoons, 2pm-5pm slump period.... if your not taking antidepressants there something you can order on the internet : stablon http://nootropicsdepot.com/tianeptine-sulfate-25mg-capsules/
it's a serotonin update enhancer.....and it's not through a prescription, it works with depression well
but as for the morning depression, having coffee and doing waking up exercises, both mentally....sometimes doing strenuous exercise works but it depends on the person, serotonin plays a big role in waking up the mornings depressed, norepinephrine causes you to wake up and be alert, ready for the day, dopamine is more for pleasure and motivation, having a drive.....
maybe try some prozac, or wellbutrin ... if you havent already.....

There may be reasons for why you experience these things other than depression. Cortisol release follows this pattern. However, if your cycle is indeed due to depression, it follows a pattern that is observed in melancholic (endogenous) depression. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) tend to be more effective for melancholic depression than the SSRIs. The SNRIs are more comparable to TCA, and might be worth trying if you find TCAs to be intolerable.

Have you had sleep study done? Could be sleep apnea, and as your body oxygenates throughout the day you feel better...?

I don't know.
I have a (perhaps?) similar thing with waking in the morning and feeling fairly awful. Awful enough to choose to go back to blissful sleep if possible rather than starting my day. When I get up it takes me a while to get going... A slump, yeah.
I wonder if this is what drives people to high sugar breakfast (for the fairly instant energy burst / feel good?)
I don't know.
I find what helps me is to have something to get up for. Where I have to set an alarm and actually get up and get moving when it says in order to get out the door on time. After a bit of a nasty transition period I eventually pop out of bed and get things done in a relatively unthinking state... And I'm into my day without any pains at all... I try my best to mimic that when I don't have something I need to get to - but I don't seem capable of doing that... I always in my drowsy state think that it is a better idea to cheat myself and go back to sleep...

i have the same thing. cortisol levels are very high, releasing too early in the morning..then the comedown leaves you feeling kind of shaken for a while until that wears off and you feel better again later in the day. my theory its the body's fight or flight system being thrown out of whack. remind yourself it passes.
