Has anyone done workshops, intensives?

Posted by Tabitha on July 22, 2009, at 12:42:46

I'm getting desperate I guess. I'm on a newsletter for 'inner bonding' process (you can google it to find the site), it all makes such compelling promises, heal your emptiness, love yourself, connect to spirit, yada yada yada. All stuff I need for sure, but it's nothing new & groundbreaking, and if all these years of therapy hasn't made many inroads, why would I think another program would help?

Also the site is pretty commercial-- you have to pay to gain access to much, and I can't really find much info on it except for promotional stuff and a handful of Amazon reviews, so it doesn't seem like it really has much of a grassroots following. I'm tempted to do an intensive workshop though. Have never done anything like that, and am kind of skeptical about it.

I asked my therapist once, and he said he advised against it for me because he doesn't think my ego strength is strong enough.

But that wouldn't be a factor if your problem isn't with ego strength.

And I rather think he may have been overly cautious with me.

Yeah, I did a Tibetan Buddhist thingo at a Transpersonal Psych Conferance. I was the very worst person to be doing what I now describe. You had to pick a partner at random and face each other. Then you put your hands on each others' hearts (so you could feel the heartbeat and therefore the anxiety). Then you were to stare into each others' eyes, and 'when the moment is right say "I know you"'. Well everyone there faked it. Surely they must have. God knows. I don't know what goes through the heads of the members of our species. But I just stood there, staring into her eyes feeling worse and worse. I should have said to her, looking deeply and meaningfully into her eyes, in a very serious voice 'Send for an ambulance'. Bugger that. I'd rather take a walk in the bush. Cheaper, and better for you too.

Then there was that damned Hoffmann Quadrinity Process. They took my $900 deposit and didn't return it.

I have completely given up on any help like that.
I am more than happy (should I say happy to be quite unhappy?) to be left alone.

Thanks for the laugh, Sig. There's a scene in Annie Hall featuring the line "Touch my heart. With your foot." Sounds very much like your workshop. And yes I was afraid there might be an uncomfortable forced sudden intimacy aspect to a workshop.

Dinah, I asked my T about this. She hasn't heard of the particular program, but she said workshops break you down & get a quick result, you come away high, then it generally fades. Pretty much what I'd expect.

But I still may do it, because it's sort of half vacation, half therapy, and I do need a vacation. As vacations go, even if there's an uncomfortable aspect to the workshop part, it might be preferable to going someplace alone, or going to some kind of typical tour group thing.

I did have a pretty good experience with a yoga retreat once. There was just about the right amount of forced mingling for me.
