My cat is sick and I'm miserable (bio functrigger)

Posted by crushedout on April 26, 2007, at 14:44:38

I adopted an 18-year-old cat a year ago.

Anyway, he's very ill now and throwing up all over my house. But half the time he's kittenish and happy and half the time he's sick. It's been going on for months but gotten much worse recently.

I'm a total wreck and don't know what to do.

I just made a therapy appointment but I don't know what good that's gonna do me.

It's really hard to know when to put an animal down. When does his suffering outweigh his happiness? Where does my quality of life fit in? Right now it's in the f'in toilet.

(((((((crushedout)))))))
That seems to be a lot of years old for a pet. I know how hard it is to put a pet down. I had to do it to my dog of 15 years. I still miss him and it's been over 2 years ago.
I think you should take the cat to the vet and have it checked out. They will offer advice to you on whether you should have it put down or not. I know you show love to a pet that is suffering and there's nothing they can do, so putting them down is a good choice for the pet. I don't think we're ever ready to say good-bye. Think of the pet, and go from there.
Good luck with it. I know it's hard. :'(

Thanks, Ladybug.

I didn't really give the whole story: I've taken him to several vets already and done all kinds of tests and they have no idea what is wrong with him. It could be anything from undetectable cancer to simple IBS, but there's no way to tell.

I really think it's gotta be worse than something like IBS because the symptoms are just so severe.

But I have no one to advise me on how to proceed. It's entirely on my shoulders.

P.S. I wrote out a long response to your post and then lost it somehow. :( The one about feeling like your T is better than you. I can totally relate to that.

But I don't have the strength now to rewrite my post. :(

Crushed, I been where you are.
Its agonizing.
I finally decided to have my dog put down at the wee hours of the a.m. I called vet, she came.
My dog had wandered in to my room yet again, panting, obviously in pain. We'd been to vet, accupunture, x-rays...nothing helped.
It was the hardest thing.
But in the end, I was with him, and it was peaceful his going. He was no longer in pain.
I will never know what was wrong with him, and I will never know if I made the right descision.
It was a descion made with love. Thats all I can know.
This is the only thing that makes water come to my eyes, and even drip out.
So in the end, it was like HE let me know it was time for him to go.
The grief was terrible.
But he is at peace.
Sorry your in this position crushed.
Your cat is lucky to have an owner who loves him so.
Muffled

thanks, muffled

Muffled, your post made me cry. I too had to put down my beloved dog of 15 years. That was over 2 years ago and I still miss him.
What a lovely story and the perfect words to express your love for your pet.

I just lost my beloved Old Man, at not-quite-19. I was very much afraid that I wouldn't know when it was time to let him go, but when the time came he made it clear to me. (Of course, I'm still second-guessing myself... That's because I'm crazy, though, so don't worry about that.)

As for the tummy troubles, my cat was doing that, too, for years. We need to replace all our carpeting, and one of our bathroom floors because of it. The best fix for kitties with tender tummies depends on what's causing it -- some eat too fast, and then it comes back up, so slowing them down helps. I did this for my cat by putting large -- VERY large -- acrylic marbles into his dry catfood dish. He had to slow down to eat around them, and that stopped it. He also got sick when he got constipated, which required getting him past the constipation -- through medication and enemas. You'd have to weigh whether that was worth it to you. Some cats get sensitive to their food, and throw it up, in which case, there are sensitive stomach foods. Then there's just plain anxiety, which can cause some cats to be sick, and you just have to try to minimize activity near feeding stations/feeding times.

I really hope that helps, and if it almsot does, feel free to babblemail me for more info. Anything else I can think to say just gets into the "too much really gross information" range for this board, IMO...

I am so sorry your cat is so sick.
I have tears in my eyes typing, I know how painful it is to deal with this.

Last year I had to decide to put down my 14-year-old cat that had been with me through soooooo much. She had survived some surgeries, she had tumors, cancer, it was controlled for some months and then she developed more and was in pain and would hide under the bed and she was suffering a lot.
After discussing it over with the vet, we agreed the best was to end her suffering and hold on to all the good years we had given her and shared together. It was really hard to let her go. :-(
but I tried sooooo hard to hold on to all we had shared and I knew she had felt loved and happy..I didn't want her to suffer anymore.
But it's hard.
Even putting a fish down has been hard for me and made me cry. We develop a beautiful bond with animals, pets, and it's so hard to have to let them go.

I am so sorry about your cat.

Sending you strength during this hard time,
I understand...

Frida

:)

thank you racer. i'm starting to think it's drinking water that's making him puke so i've taken away his water and i'm giving him subcu fluids.

i also started feeding him much smaller amounts just in case that's aggravating his problem.

thank you so much for your advice. i've been too overwhelmed to write back but all these posts have been very helpful.
